Historical Highlights

1830:  Jacob and Mary Warner came from Maryland and settled in Mogadore. Faithful followers of Bishop Asbury’s faith, they soon gathered other interested people into “Class Meetings”.

 

1833: First church organized and meetings held in Warner’s Barn, nearby schoolhouses and even outside during nice weather.

 

1838: On March 30th, a church building site was purchased from Ariel Bradley.

 

1841: “Subscription paper” started by Mr. Warner and son, Ben, for a new church. This was built at a cost of $490.81. Among others helping with the first church, was Mr. Samuel Hall, an ancestor of Parker Wilcox.

 

1886: Improvements were made in the church, including one more room to the north side and remodeling of the interior.

 

1921: The cornerstone of a new church was laid on July 10th and completed at a cost of $46,473.14.

 

1922: Mogadore School Sports played in Church Gymnasium. This gym floor was raised to its present level in 1954.

 

1940: The women’s group of the church changed its name from Ladies Aid to Women’s Society of Christian Service. (WSCS)

 

1960: Mogadore School held classes in the church basement for three semesters.

 

1964: The present parsonage was purchased from Harold Shaffer for $24,500 and dedicated on March 7, 1965. Paul Clark and his family were the first occupants.

 

1972: The church’s women’s organization became United Methodist Women.

 

1974: The Sanctuary was remodeled and the “overflow” area was created.

 

1982: A new Pastor’s Study was established.

 

1983: The Church celebrated its Sesquicentennial. (150 years)

 

1995: An addition to the church was built, which included an elevator, restrooms and an additional entryway with easy access to the parking area. It was completed in 1997 and dedicated during the church service March 29, 1998.

 

2000: The church moved into the new millennium, dedicated to its Mission Statement:

 

 The Mission of the Mogadore United Methodist Church is to follow the example of Jesus Christ, demonstrating Christ’s love and service to others, through worship, outreach, fellowship and spiritual growth.
